The Ash is a native Irish tree. It's almost pure white, and with a coarse grain is a tough wood with a quality not unlike elastic. Not surprisingly therefore it used for making hurleys, oars and tool handles. In Norse legends the Ash, with its tall stem is said to hold up the heaven, with its roots in Hades and the earth at its centre. The winged fruits of the Ash are said to be the 'keys of knowledge' and horses particularly favour the tree for shelter.
