Famine furniture refers to a style of Irish furniture, also known as Irish cottage furniture that grew up during the famine years, 1845-1849. The style continued for many years afterwards. Essentially furniture of this type is made from salvaged pieces of wood, and with basic hand tools. It is hugely poignant since it emerges from a very dark period in Irish history.
