Famine Chair II

Famine furniture refers to a style of Irish furniture, also known as Irish cottage furniture that grew up during the famine years, 1845-1849. The style continued for many years afterwards. Essentially furniture of this type is made from salvaged pieces of wood, and with basic hand tools. It is hugely poignant since it emerges from a very dark period in Irish history. 97 cms high x 63 cms wide x 38 cms deep. Only available for delivery in Ireland and the U.K.

Famine Chair circa early 1900’s, a difficult moment in history and imbuing furniture of this type with great poignancy. These pieces were made from salvaged wood at a time when people had very little. Chairs such as these are relatively rare due to the poor conditions of housing at the time.
